House Needs a Naming [19 Dec 2008|12:59am]
As some of you know, our 4-square original-farm-house-on-this-corner-of-Elgin, surrounded by 1-story 50's housing home is 100 years old this year.

We've done some upgrades since moving in a few years back, finally got rid of the last of the (possibly) original windows this year, and have been meaning to give it a proper name to commemorate it's centenary.

We've had all year, no rush, but nothing has gelled. So as the year comes to a close, I thought I would ask for suggestions from those who (kinda) know us.

Any thoughts?

Gigantic Understatement [26 Sep 2008|04:16pm]
A line I've been hearing over and over this week during the rest of the financial fallout is that 'our economy is built on oil!'

No, no, no. That's not thinking big enough. Try our CIVILIZATION is built on oil. We've been making it so for over a hundred years, which may just indicate the depth of the problems we're going to run into as we face an enforced change away from that.

Talk about culture shock!

Fright Night... for real. [26 Sep 2008|01:41pm]
Apparently in conjunction with a theatrical showing of 'Fright Night' in LA with cast and crew present, a couple of 'guerrilla' commentaries were recorded. You can find them here.

Speaking of dissonace... [18 Sep 2008|12:38pm]
Your challenge is to write crossover fanfiction combining Captain Planet and America's Funniest Home Videos. The story should use tornadoes as a plot device!

Where are the good birthday dinner specials these days? [22 Jul 2008|01:56am]
My folks used to take me to a Japanese steakhouse in Columbus, but I don't think there are any in close driving distance here.

What national chains have good deals? And preferably ones that don't do the stupid birthday song thing.

Movie Night - July 5th [26 Jun 2008|04:20pm]
No commenters on my last post, but wiliqueen got a few on hers, and they were all for the 5th of July, so that's the date of the next movie night.

So, who can make it, and what should be the theme?

Since it's the holiday weekend suggestions so far have been Summer Blockbuster, Patriotic, and in a change of pace a vote for my long delayed Dracula day, since wiliqueen is on a vampire panel at her next convention soon.

So say if you can come, and give me suggestions for the theme of your choice and some appropriate movies.

No 4E for me... [12 Jun 2008|09:17am]
At least not before the BIG four-oh, it seems.

After keeping my estimated ship date for the 4E D&D book set as June 10th until well into June 11th, I got an e-mail from Amazon telling me that they were moving the estimate back until the middle of July!

I've generally had good luck with their free shipping, but this time it seems to have burned me, since it seems folks who paid for shipping and made order just days before the release have gotten books, while those of us who pre-ordered months ago with free shipping have to wait.

Still, I've got two games I'm running and a third I'm playing in, so I can wait.

Oh, and a 3rd edition game that's on hiatus, and I've seen enough of 4 to realize that it is enough of a different game that it won't replace 3rd with my group. It's just another game.

Next Movie Night? You help decide when [09 Jun 2008|09:43pm]
After two successful movie nights in May, we're thinking of having only one this month.

Question is, when?

Available weekends include June 21st, June 28th (though that doesn't work well for us) and finally July 5th, if we stretch the definition of June...:-)

I like the idea of July 5th, but is anyone going to be around and willing to make the trek out here?

Let me know in comments.

(Edited to remove the 28th, as it is a Wizard World weekend, and has other con stuff going on that weekend as well).

4th Ed Keep - Online Gametable Fodder? Who might be interested? [09 Jun 2008|02:33pm]
So, I don't have my 4th Edition D&D books yet, but I DID find a group online that was going to do a conversion of their own.

Read more...Collapse )

So assuming the Online Gametable becomes a reality, and we can make it affordable for all interested (there is something about monthly 'free play' coupons coming with each membership, to allow non-members to join in on the gametable) - who's interested in a Keep on the Borderlands campaign online?

So, 4th Edition is Upon Us... Time for Nostolgia - Keep on the Borderlands [05 Jun 2008|03:58pm]
When 3rd Edition D&D first came out, an acquaintance who had been kicked out of the same game I was (a story for another time) decided to run his own.

His choice was to revamp the first published module I ever owned/played, B2, Keep on the Borderlands. With my 4th Edition books coming (hopefully) next week, I've given some thought to what I should run - and I can't think of anything better than revamping that venerable product for 4th.

I know that there was a 'sequel' of sorts published at the tail end of 2end Edition - Return to the Keep on the Borderlands.

Anyone have that/played it? Is it worth tracking down? I was thinking they probably greatly expanded descriptions of the Keep, and would be useful to snag stuff from.

Guilty Pleasures Movie Night [22 May 2008|12:44am]
So, it seems Saturday was the consensus, and there have been a number of suggestions as to the movies (as for shorts, we have been offered Dangermouse, so we may have to pull random stuff from the archives to round that out...)

Any others? Suggestions for shorts?

So we're looking at 2pm - ???
Looks like the weather will be good for grilling (which we haven't done yet this year, so we'll need to try it out before then to make sure).

For those coming in on the train, the last one back leaves around 10pm. Let us know when you are arriving for pickup from National St station.

Sort of a dungeon crawl.... [07 Mar 2008|11:54pm]
So, we didn't end up playing D&D tonight, but the latest meeting of the League of Elgin Gamers DID feature a Gygaxian tribute of sorts. And I got to kill Amanda from Highlander. Again!

As good as last time when she stepped through the Gate only to realize she was on the Moon, staring up at the Earth rise on the horizon. She died several times before getting out of that one... :-)

First Session: Not So Majestic [07 Mar 2008|07:56am]
Well, we had our character creation and first 'battle' for my new recurring Mutants and Masterminds Thursday night game, "Are You MAJESTIC?, in which supers appear on a reality show, vying for a spot on the world's best supers team.

It could have gone better.Collapse )

Calling Reality Show aficionados - Help Me Brainstorm a Game [20 Feb 2008|07:53pm]
OK, I'm putting together an alternative campaign for my Thursday night crew. Something we'll play once a month or so. Which brings up episodic, which made me think of a reality Game show. I like the concept, but I'm not big with knowing the reality genre, so I'd like to get some ideas of challenges, gambits, games to play with secret identities, and the like.

Oh, and as is usual, if any of my players (the EAGLES, that is) find this - stay out!

Here's the basic pitch.Collapse )

So, supers and reality - what sort of games should I play on them?
